The Annual Renewal of Active Status (ARAS) was previously a requirement for the continued receipt of pension. It involved the personal visit of pensioners to GSIS on their birth month every year to activate their status. This policy was revoked to spare pensioners, who are usually old and sickly, the inconvenience of going to a GSIS office just to prove that they are alive.
As an alternative measure, GSIS partnered with the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the Local Civil Regristrar, which will provide a report on the status of the pensioners. However, pensioners based abroad are required to renew their active status via Skype, a Web-based software that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet free of charge.
GSIS has also resumed the requirement for pensioners living in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). To minimize the inconveneice for pensioners in the region, GSIS deployed 12 additional kiosks in the islands of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
