Close to a thousand active members and pensioners who are either residing or working in typhoon- and flashflood-hit municipalities of Lapuyan in Zamboanga del Sur and Gen. Nakar in Quezon will benefit from the emergency loan that state pension fund Government Service Insurance System recently approved for release.
GSIS earmarked Php10.44 million and Php16.52 million in emergency loans for its active members and pensioners in Lapuyan, Zamboanga del Sur and Gen. Nakar, Quezon, respectively.
Active members working or residing in the said areas may borrow Php20,000 if they have no existing emergency loans. Members with existing loans may borrow up to Php40,000, from which the outstanding balance will be deducted.
Old-age pensioners are required to apply in person to avail of the Php20,000 pension emergency loan. If they are also active members, they may borrow only once.
The deadline for application in Lapuyan is January 12 and in Gen. Nakar, January 15.
Active members are eligible to apply if they are not on leave of absence without pay, have no arrears in paying premium contributions, and have no loans that are unpaid for more than six months.
They may apply for the loan through the GSIS Wireless Automated Processing System (GWAPS) kiosks in the 42 branch offices, 14 extension offices, and 58 service desks of GSIS; provincial capitols; city halls; municipal offices; large government agencies such as the Department of Education; 27 Robinsons Malls; and SM Supermalls in Manila, Pampanga, and Cebu.
The loan is payable in 36 monthly instalments, with a 6 percent interest rate per annum. It is covered by a loan redemption insurance, which deems the loan fully paid in case of death of the borrower, provided that he or she has up-to-date loan repayment.
Loan proceeds are electronically credited to the borrower’s GSIS eCard or unified multipurpose identification (UMID) card.
Aside from the two municipalities, GSIS previously offered emergency loans for typhoons Nona- and Lando-affected members and pensioners who are based in Romblon, Albay, Mindoro, Sorsogon, and Northern Samar.
